Visit Ai-Khanoum on your way to the Badakhshan region
via the Wakhan Corridor

Ai-Khanoum is a Hellenistic archaeological site located at the confluence of the Oxus (Amu Darya) and Kokcha rivers. Ai-Khanoum means “Bride's Moon” and was excavated by the French Archaeological Mission (DAFA) from 1964 until the Soviet invasion in 1979.
This is a site of the Bactrian Kingdom, which was founded by the descendants of the army left by Alexander the Great, and is the easternmost Greek-style city. According to historical evidence, it was destroyed by the invasion of nomadic tribes from the north in the first century BC. For many years, the site was used during recent wars, which led to the ruins being completely destroyed. Looting continues to this day, and the site visible from the top of the hill is full of looting holes. Despite that, this location, overlooking Tajikistan on the opposite bank of the Oxus River, is really spectacular. It makes you truly believe Ptolemy’s famous words when he said that Ai-Khanoum “is the Alexandria on the banks of the Oxus.”
